“We cannot stop China if it’s going to be serious about this,” he said on Monday. “They are going to try to take over.”

The country has been developing new technology for nuclear weapons in a bid to deter China from the South China Sea and counter any other attempts by Beijing to block trade or access to the sea.

China claims almost the entire South China Sea. Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam also have rival claims.

However, Beijing says these rival claims have been historically misinterpreted and that it is only a matter of time before these disputes fall under UN arbitration under the Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Some 70 U.S. senators signed on to a letter on Thursday urging China to drop efforts to challenge UN claims, but most Republicans have been hesitant to endorse action.

Many in Washington see Beijing as seeking to hold back potential regional turmoil in order to maintain its own grip on influence and leverage to gain from any future trade deals with the U.S. Congress.

In a separate development on Tuesday, a U.S. judge approved the release of an asylum seeker detained at a detention center in Indonesia.
